Dairy farmers in Munyu Thika East sub county have been asked to be careful when feeding their animals with fodder containing a lot of water.
The Thika East sub county veterinary officer John Gachago has said that wet and succulent fodder may cause abdominal complications to the cattle that feeds on it.
"Farmers ought to know that fodder like nappier grass now contains a lot of water which put their animals at high risk of suffering from bloat," Gachago said in his Gatuanyaga office on Wednesday.
Gachago advised farmers to cut down the fodder they intend to give to their cattle in advance to give it sometime to dry. He also cautioned the farmers against giving their animals too much leguminous fodder saying that it has a high potential of causing bloat.
"Fodder from the legume family that is fetched straight from the field is highly discouraged especially during this period," he said.
Grazers in the area have also been asked not to be taking their cattle early in the grazing fields when the grass is still wet. The veterinary officer said that his team is on the ground to help farmers who may have such problems.
