Scores of women protested in Murunyu Location, Bahati Ward on Tuesday over what they termed as laxity by the provincial administration to curb the sale and consumption of illicit liquor.
The procession of women waving twigs brought business activities at Murunyu shopping centre to a standstill, with the residents blaming the administration of failing to act in the fight against the illicit liquor.
“Our chief should use his authority to end the sale and consumption of illicit liquor and save our sons from dying,” said Janet Muthoni, 74, one whose has lost three sons to the deadly drink.
However, the area chief, Zakayo Kamuda denied the accusations and said that his office is doing everything possible to arrest those behind the sale of the illicit liquor
“The other two sons of mine consume this drink and I fear they might all perish,” added Muthoni.
The protestors blamed bodaboda riders of transporting and delivering the illicit liquor to different clients, saying they have greatly contributed flourishing illicit liquor trade.
“Boda boda operators transport the chang'aa at 5am and distribute to dealers in different areas, they are making it easy for the businessmen,” said Muthoni.
The women urged National Authority for Campaign against Drug Abuse (NACADA) to intervene and eliminate the consumption of the illicit liquor trade.
