A dark cloud befell locals in Kiriaini market in Murang'a county on Wednesday night after a businessman was shot dead on his way home.
The trader Eliud Muguku aged 54 died shortly after he was taken to Kiriani mission hospital to receive treatment.
Muguku was shot while on a boda-boda by two unknown gunmen just a few meters from his residence.
The boda-boda rider came out alive in the ordeal but got leg injuries.
Confirming the incident, Kiriani OCPD Mr Charles Mutua said nothing was stolen from the deceased, noting that they are yet to establish the motive for the killing.
“After they shot the businessman, the assailants escaped under cover of darkness as local residents rushed to the scene to find out what was happening,” he added.
Locals in Kiriani have condemned the killing and asked the security officers to beef up security in the area since now they feel unsafe.
“We want police to increase patrols at night in this market and the surroundings so as to curb the increased criminal cases,” said one of the residents who sought anonymity.
