Senate Deputy Speaker Kithure Kindiki and Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen are drafting a bill to enable a deputy governor who takes over the running of a county to appoint an assistant.
Currently, there is no provision for a by-election or appointment of a deputy governor by the person assuming office in case of death, resignation or impeachment of the governor.
Murkomen and Kindiki’s move comes after the sudden death of Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru in a grisly road accident on Tuesday.
Murkomen who represents Elgeyo Marakwet in the Senate said the lacuna must be sealed.
“The situation should not be allowed to continue. This bill is of importance because it will be risky for Mr. Kahiga (Mutahi) to run the county alone,” said Murkomen.
Mr. Kahiga is the current Nyeri deputy governor and will serve as governor until 2022 general elections.
