Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has said he is quitting maize farming for Avocados.
In a post on his Facebook page, the Senator claimed he had not received payments of the maize he delivered to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCBP) six months ago.
"Until now, I haven't been paid," reads part of his post.
According to Murkomen, he has made it clear that he will not plant maize again and he will be moving to plant avocados.
He, however, regretted why he planted maize yet he has no contract with anyone to feed.
"It is time for the farmer in me to think profit first," Murkomen posted.
The Senate Majority Leader made these sentiments on Saturday, as the Ministry of Agriculture continues to be on the receiving end concerning the Sh1.9 billion maize scam.
The scandal is said to have involved cartels who took advantage of their positions in government to import excess subsidized maize and sell the grain to the National Cereals and Produce Board at exaggerated prices.
A section of farmers and leaders from North Rift are now demanding that the Ministry of Agriculture make the list of individuals and companies who imported maize from Mexico and Uganda public.
