Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has weighed in on the recent resignations of columnists from the Nation Media Group (NMG).
According to Murkomen, some of the columnists have been at NMG for far too long and it is time for new blood to take over.
The Elgeyo Marakwet legislator also faulted the resigning columnists for leaning on one side and he feels the Kenyan media should now engage younger and progressive columnists.
"Some have been columnist since I was in High School. We need new blood," tweeted Murkomen on Tuesday.
He added, "It is time the Kenyan media recruits new crop of independent columnist. Our friends were leaning on one side for far too long. Media houses should recruit younger and progressive columnists."
In a statement, the columnists cited lack of editorial independence and freedom as their main reasons for quitting NMG.
"We refuse to continue to clothe the loss of editorial independence and freedom at the NMG with respectability. Thankfully, public opinion is no longer in the sole grip of those who buy ink by the barrel," read a part of the statement as quoted by Business Today.
Among those who have resigned include George Kegoro of KNHCR, Muthoni Wanyeki of Open Society Foundation, Maina Kiai of InformAction among others.
