South Africa's 3rd post-independence President Jacob Zuma bowed to pressure from the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party and public disquiet on Wednesday February 14 and resigned.
The world reacted to the news, with much sentiments from Africans across the continent expressing their thoughts over what they term as a unique season for the continent.
But one Kipchumba Murkomen had a different insight over the subject.
The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator and Senate majority leader said Zuma’s resignation was a great lesson for politicians whose ends fail to meet in time.
“My Best wishes to President Zuma in his future endeavors,” the Senator stated “I wish other politicians can learn to quit politics if it ain’t working than to cause death, destruction plus the division of a nation and it’s people in a desperate thirsty for power.”
This statement has been understood as one directed to Opposition leader Raila Odinga who has vied for the country’s top job unsuccessfully for at least four times.
Netizens were angered with Murkomen’s assertions.
A user @adewisto noted: “Last time I check the people in power that have killed innocent children, man and woman just hang on to power are Uhuru and Ruto.”
“No one can resign from politics. You only resign from an office, and even after resigning from holding a given office, you still remain political,” @prof_omondi said.
@Opineke observed: “I wish some people can relinquish power peacefully. It’s sad they have to steal elections, muzzle the media and oppress its own people just to stay in power. How I wish some people could also return stolen public coffers. If wishes were horses”
“I can't believe there was a time I actually found you intelligent. I have never been able to forgive myself for that goof.” @MtaitaMkauma wrote.
“It is my hope that @UKenyatta will take this advice seriously and save the country from another Eurobond scam; a Sister that fouls disadvantaged youths to hog all businesses at mAfya House; killing people to force himself on them; Another NYS Scam where Mur-Con-Men loots freely,” @TomJMO stated.
On Wednesday evening, Zuma, 75, issued a televised resignation statement on the evening of saying "No life should be lost in my name. ANC should never be divided because of me. I have therefore decided to resign as president of the republic with immediate effect.”
The premature exit of Jacob Zuma gave green light for Cyril Ramaphosa, who was recently picked to replace him as the president of the ANC party to ascend to South Africa’s top job. Ramaphosa, an abrasive trade unionist and reputable figure in economics has been serving as the deputy president of the South African nation.
