Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has called for calm and peace in the nation amid political antagonism.
Speaking during the burial service of former Nyeri governor Wahome Gakuru at Kagumo High School in Nyeri Saturday, the Senate leader of the majority also urged leaders to promote peace and not let their desire for power further divide the country.
''Leaders should remember that leadership comes from God and therefore be contended with the level of leadership given to them by the electorate.
However strong their desire for leadership may be, they should avoid scrambling for power to an extent that it becomes costly to the nation,'' said Murkomen. He further condemned Friday's clashes in Nairobi that saw a number of casualties recorded.
The confrontations erupted when supporters of opposition's NASA alliance, who had come out to receive Raila Odinga engaged the police in running battles with the lawmaker now blaming Odinga for the unfolding.
''It is sad that a national leader like Raila Odinga can be the reason for ugly confrontations simply because he has not acquired his desired political position or power and is unable to restrain his supporters.
He is a respected leader and should use his influence in the nation to lead the way,'' he added.
