Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen now wants counties affected by the cattle rustling menace to establish security departments to tame the situation.
Speaking on Saturday after holding a chain of meetings along the boundaries of Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot, the most hit counties, the Senate Majority Leader further advised the relevant county governments to channel sufficient funds towards the initiative in an effort to restore peace.
He said that the counties risk further remaining behind economically as investors are likely to keep shunning them due to the unrest.
He also said that the same will be a helping hand to the national government which has since pledged its commitment to bring the situation under control.
''Even if security is a national government function, these counties should do more because they cannot attract investors or exploit tourism potential in the prevailing environment. Generally, there is no meaningful development until they agree on joint efforts that can guarantee peace,'' he is quoted by the Standard.
The region is yet to recover from the traditional practice which has so far seen more than 100 people lose their lives in the last one year.
More that 5000 herds of cattle have also been stolen within the same period.
