The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) has supported the secret extradition of Akasha’s sons over drug trafficking links.
The Akashas, who have been fighting their extradition for close to three years, were secretly flown to the United States a few days ago.
Speaking on behalf of the council, CIPK organizing secretary Sheikh Mohamed Khalifa said the extradition of Baktash Akasha, his brother Ibrahim Akasha, Vijay Goswami and Hussein Shabakash was a good move, as drug abuse has destroyed the lives of many youth not only at the Coast but in the entire country.
Khalifa called upon the US and Kenyan governments to take stern action against the suspects.
Speaking at his office after a meeting with the council, Khalifa said it is unfortunate to have drug addicts behind bars as drug barons walk free.
“Our jails cannot be filled by youth who are victims of drugs, yet the barons are walking scot-free,” said Khalifa, as quoted by The Star.
The cleric said the council is not ready to have the Akasha’s back in the country, adding that it will support any measure to have them retained in the US.
His remarks come after President Uhuru Kenyatta vowed to eliminate drug barons in Mombasa.
