In Mombasa, thousands of Muslims thronged mosques, open yards and community centres for special prayers today to crown the holy month of Ramadhan.

Former Chief Kadhi Sheikh Hamad Kassim, led the main prayers at Ronald Ngala Primary School playground and prayed for global peace saying there were many tragedies unfolding in most parts of the Muslim world.

Sheikh Kassim urged Muslims to sustain the virtues learnt during the month of fasting and prayers in their day-to-day interactions.

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, Senator Hassan Omar and Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir led other leaders in calling on Muslims to celebrate the Eid in a good and calm atmosphere.

They called for peaceful co-existence among Kenyans of diverse religions and ethnicity reminding Kenyans they should continue to display the spirit of brotherhood, harmony and tolerance.

After the special prayers to mark the day, festivities now start with visits to the homes of relatives and friends with greetings of goodwill.
