A day after a case was filed at the Machakos High Court to legalise female circumcision, Rift Valley Council of Imams has come out to strongly register their opposition towards the move by Dr. Tatu Kamau.
Dr. Kamau claims that the Anti-FGM act is discriminating against women who want to undergo FGM as a rite of passage.
The Imams said the practice would subject women and girls to serious social and health ramifications.
Speaking at Jamia Mosque in Nakuru town, the leaders led by Imam Ahmed Rashid said FGM has more harm to the women.
“We have made a major step as a nation in fighting FGM and we will not allow some individuals to take us back," he said.
Women who attended the Imams’ seminar also called for weeding out FGM.
