Muslim leaders in Mandera county have declared war on drug abuse which is widely used by youth.

The leaders speaking during a security meeting on Sunday in Mandera town said the practice has reached alarming levels in the county.

"We are disturbed by the rate at which drugs are being abused by the youth and even elderly people irrespective of gender in Mandera. It is time to fight the problem," said Sheikh Ahmed Hassan, the Imams council's Mandera chairman.

He called on county leaders to intervene to end the menace.

"We want our MCAs and MPs to ensure good laws are put in place so that the sale of miraa in Mandera is regulated," he said.

He accused miraa traders of supplying drugs in Mandera from Meru and neighboring Ethiopian towns.

"Miraa business in this town has caused the current situation. Drugs such as cocaine, bhang and heroin are hidden in miraa bags and transported safely to Mandera," he noted.

Mandera town OCPD Albert Kipchumba said a crackdown on drug abuse will be intensified.
