Former Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu has downplayed claims that he has filed for bankruptcy.

According to The Star, the former lawmaker said that the allegations that he filed for bankruptcy are not only baseless but also ill-motivated.

The politician also said that no one has a right to criticize him even if he opted to take the move.

Mutambu, who defected from Wiper to Jubilee, insisted that he is financially stable.

He argued that his political enemies want to tarnish his name by spreading lies about his financial background.

"Why should I seek to declare myself bankrupt. The reports are being fuelled by my political adversaries to blackmail me," he said, as quoted by the local daily.

According to a statement alleged to come from the court, any one individual who was opposed to the lawmaker’s application is expected to present a complain before the hearing of the case is heard.

Mutambo has called upon his supporters to ignore the allegations leveled against them, terming them political witch hunt by his enemies.

"I want to urge my supporters that they should ignore the reports as cheap propaganda aimed at soiling my good reputation."
