Machakos senator Johnston Muthama has defended Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka against criticism following his endorsement for presidency in 2022 elections by a section of Kamba leaders.
Speaking on Citizen TV on Tuesday, the former senator said Kalonzo remains the Kamba political kingpin.
He said the attacks on Kalonzo are misplaced, stating that the former Vice president is popular and experienced enough to succeed president Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
Muthama said critics questioning Kalonzo’s endorsement are envious and want to bring him down.
“Kalonzo’s endorsement by the Kamba leaders for the presidency in 2022 is in order because he is still the most popular Kamba politician,” Muthama said.
Muthama defended Kalonzo stating the Wiper leader has been keen on uniting the country.
He said Kalonzo has been vocal in the push for national unity and reconciliation.
Muthama said the former Vice President remains the suitable candidate to ascend to power in 2022.
He noted that Wiper will seek partnership to ensure Kalonzo makes it to Statehouse.
The former senator also defended Kalonzo’s proposal to change Wiper Party to One Kenya Movement (OKM).
On Monday, Kalonzo was endorsed for the presidency in 2022 by Kamba leaders during a Kamba leaders unity meeting in Matungulu, Machakos County.
The endorsement has elicited mixed reactions with several leaders rubbishing and terming it fake.
