Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama has revealed that he was nominated captain of the six lawmakers who were detained for four days over making hate remarks at the Pangani police station.
Mr Muthama, a fierce defender of Cord coalition, was arrested alongside Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire, Junnet Mohammed (Suna East), Kimani Ngunjiri (Nakuru), Moses Kuria (Gatundu South) and Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete), Kilifi woman rep Aisha Jumwa and her Busia counterpart Florence Mutua.
They denied the charges at a Nairobi court and released on bond.
And on Sunday during the homecoming of Mr Bosire, Muthama said the five settled on him given his advanced age and longtime experience as a leader.
“When we were taken to Pangani, I was elected the captain by my colleagues due to my longtime experience as a leader. They trusted me with responsibilities and I used to assign each of them duties and they were very obedient,” he said.
”Kuria was elected my deputy and he was equally a very hardworking person. I always thought he was harmful but my interaction with him at the police cell depicted a different picture of him,” added Mr Muthama.
However, Muthama admitted that the trust between the six (from both political divide) was suspicious since he at times issued orders to Cord MPs to be alert in shifts to combat any danger.
“But because we had that political animosity, those from Cord slept in shifts. Bosire could be alert at some given time so was Junnet and I so that we could combat any danger from our colleagues from Jubilee,” he claimed.
