Machakos Senator, Johnstone Muthama has launched a political campaign to impeach County Governor Alfred Mutua, in favour of his deputy Benard Kiala.
Accompanied by Kiala at a rally attended by hundreds of residents in Athi River town Machakos County on Sunday, the senator said it was high time to seek public mandate to remove Governor Mutua from the office, to avert alleged exploitation of the residents.
“The constitution states that power belongs to the people and power of the people is that which speaks language that can be understood,” said Muthama.
He claimed that Dr. Mutua's government was full of cartels that were out to completely derail the economy of Machakos County, since they had vested personal interests and those of their families.
The legislature called on the residents to vigilantly agitate for their constitutional rights of getting what rightfully belonged to them as county residents.
According to Muthama, Mutua's government has not delivered according to his promise, which he said could only end if the governor was sent home and his position taken over by his deputy Benard Kiala.
Muthama argued that it beat logics for people from other counties such as Kitui and Makueni to be hired in the counties executive, while genuine residents remained jobless.
The legislature said that he would mobilise the residents to append signatures, which he would later present to the senate to begin the governor's exit journey.
