Muthama on Tuesday said that the government has no power to ban their protests.

He stated that the constitution allows them to demonstrate and that they will not be coward by the government.

“A court order on Monday allowed us to continue with peaceful protests and the government cannot give any orders contrary from the courts,” said the Machakos senator on Phone.

The Machakos senator accused the Jubilee government of frustrating reforms at IEBC saying that Jubilee government is using police to bar reforms at the electoral body.

The senator maintained that Cord will continue with their weekly protests despite the order.

“The court has Okayed our protests and we will continue with the protests until IEBC commissioners go home,” he added.

The senator added that they will from next week hold two demonstrations weekly to force the government for dialogue over the IEBC stalemate.

On Tuesday, Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery at a press briefing at Harambee House in Nairobi said the government had banned Cord protests.

Nkaissery said that anyone who gets involved in the protests will be arrested and charged in court.

The CS said that the anti-IEBC protests had turned chaotic resulting to deaths and destruction of property.

“The anti-IEBC protests have been banned and the government will not hesitate to arrest anyone who engages in them,” said Nkaissery as quoted by the People Daily Newspaper.

Speaking at the briefing Attorney General Githu Muigai said the constitution only protects peaceful and unarmed demonstrations bit does not condone chaos.

“I can dare say the constitutional court cannot protect violent protests,” said Muigai.

Inspector General Joseph Boinnet said that two people were killed in Cord Monday protests in Kisumu, 18 others injured and 32 police officers also injured.

“These demonstrations always start as peaceful only to turn chaotic creating anxiety and tension among Kenyans who value peace,” said Boinnet.

The IG said that police will remain vigilant and will not allow anymore protests.
