Caption: Former Machakos senator Johnston Muthama. (Nation)Former Machakos senator Johnston Muthama has said NASA leaders will not surrender their travel documents as directed by the government. He said they will move to court to oppose the Jubilee administration's order.Muthama among other NASA leaders including Moses Wetangula and economist David Ndii have been ordered to surrender their passports. He addressed the press in Nairobi on Wednesday. The government has suspended passports for at least 14 NASA officials, in what is seen as part of action taken against the opposition leaders following the Uhuru Park swearing-in of Raila Odinga as the 'People’s President'.All those affected have already received letters from the Immigration Department directing them to surrender the travel documents within 21 days.In a letter addressed to the leaders, said to be 15 in total, the Director of Immigration Gordon Kihalang’wa said the revocation was done in line with the 2011 Citizen and Immigration Act, which stipulates the grounds for suspending the travel documents.“Pursuant to Section 31 of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act 2011, you are hereby notified that the passport which is in your possession remains suspended forthwith,” reads the letter.Section 31(1h) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act provides a wide latitude to the Director of Immigration to confiscate or suspend a passport or other travel document. It still remains unclear if Odinga’s passport is among those suspended.
