A Kisii based Don believes distinguished Law Professor Makau Mutua is the ideal replacement for retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga given his ‘bold’ and ‘firm’ stand on critical issues.
Mutua, Law lecturer at the SUNNY–Buffalo Law School and a staunch critic of Jubilee government is believed to be among the applicants for the CJ post.
And on Wednesday, Prof Nyachieo Bogonko backed Mutua’s bid saying he had the ‘ability’ top reform the judiciary for the benefit of the ordinary people.
“I am convinced that Makau’s boldness and firmness in approaching critical issues is a merit to Kenyans if he succeeds in his quest as CJ for this great country,” he said.
“He is a top lawyer, human rights activist, ideal qualifications for the CJ post and I believe he has all the ability for the same job. He can actually come with critical reforms and perhaps improve where Mutunga did not do that well,” he added.
He, however, cautioned the Judicial Service Commission against allowing external interferences from politicians in the process of recruitment.
“Though I don’t sit on the panel, it’s good for JSC to be guided by integrity because at times the political class is keen to interfere with the process. We want a candidate to be chosen based on ability and not whom they know,” he said.
