Kenya Film Classification board- KFCB CEO Dr Ezekiel Mutua has defended his board over claims of laxity and failure to close some of entertainment and night clubs in Mombasa accused of human trafficking, sexual activities and stripping.
Mutua, while addressing Journalists at the Technical University of Mombasa-TUM where he launched a one day workshop to discuss role of the media in shaping the society said that the board has no mandate whatsoever to investigate, arrest culprits or close the clubs as Marwa said.
According to the KFCB CEO, the board has been working very close with the security agents in Mombasa and the Coast region in ensuring that social ethics are adhered to and not allowing such evil deeds happen in those clubs.
Mutua said that the board was not mandated to issue licenses, could not arrest and prosecute and the huge role remained with security gents at the Coast led by the regional coordinator Nelson Marwa.
“Though he was expressing his pain and disappointment in what is happening in those clubs, he is the one who should move and close them and arrest all those involved, we only report to the security agents for action but we cannot arrest and close the clubs,” added Mutua.
He said that the same week which Marwa made the sentiments, KFCB was conducting training to security and administration officers in Mombasa on how they will investigate and take action against such clubs.
“KFCB is against such activities where sexual activities, stripping and human trafficking are taking places in some clubs in Mombasa that is why we work with the police,” he noted.
He also appealed to the County government of Mombasa to review the licenses g of the clubs so that those going against the laws of the country are shut and their proprietors arrested.
Last week while addressing Journalists in Mombasa, Marwa criticised KFCB for what he termed as laxity and failure of the board to act on such clubs and ensure that they are closed.
“These people just make noise when they come down at the Coast, if they will not shut down the four to five clubs conducting such unethical activities I will do it myself,” said Marwa.
