Machakos County government has established a ‘Governors Fund’ that will give scholarships to needy but bright university graduates seeking to advance their studies.
Governor Alfred Mutua, speaking on Saturday during Daystar University's graduation, said the scholarship will pay schools fees for the students and the fund, which is already in place, will be launched soon.
He said that the fund will award scholarships to only needy students adding that it will help mentor university graduates before they join the job market.
“We want to support bright but needy university graduates who wish to advance their studies at Masters and PHD levels, and also help them get jobs,” he said.
Mutua said that the county has bright students who he asked to consider working with his government on various development issues.
“As a county government, we need such skills and knowledge to advance development,” said Mutua.
He urged graduates to use their skills and knowledge to impact the society positively. He also asked graduates to take up entrepreneurship instead of waiting to be employed.
Mutua said that his government has in place a programme where university students are placed on internship and mentored.
He pledged to support education programmes in the county with the aim of making education accessible to locals.
