Machakos governor Alfred Mutua has maintained that he respects health workers, downplaying allegations by the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union that the governor is undermining and harassing health workers in the county.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, the governor further asserted his commitment to improving service delivery in health, saying provision of health services is important to the people of Machakos.
"I have a lot of respect for doctors and for all health practitioners. Health, to me and my Government is a priority and I believe the work done by doctors, nurses and other health workers is not work but service. In actual fact, it is doing God’s work," Mutua said.
"The provision of health services is therefore, important to the people of Machakos and Kenya and my Government has worked hard to provide an enabling environment through infrastructure improvements and working conditions for our health workers," he added.
