Machakos governor Dr. Alfred Mutua has lauded the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for slashing salaries for top state employees.

The Maendeleo Chap Chap leader said that all leaders must support the move to prove how selfless they are in their public duty commitments.

Speaking in Matungulu, the Machakos incumbent praised the Sara Serem commission for making such a bold step.

“We cannot afford to have a country of a few millionaires and millions of poor people. That is why I support Serem in slashing the salaries of the country’s top earners including politicians,” Mutua said.

The move has received mixed reactions from the most affected politicians. President Uhuru Kenyatta said that he supports the pay cut and urged other leaders to comply with the suggestion. However, some leaders do not support Serem.

Funyula MP Paul Otuoma is one of the few who have criticized the commission for slashing politicians’ salaries.

“Before even the current team of SRC personnel come into the helm, there existed a team that sat down and assessed all scenarios and saw the need for MPs to be given certain allowances. Sarah Serem and her team cannot just make amendments to the salary structure without consulting every stakeholder,” Otuoma complained.
