Machakos county Governor Alfred Mutua has joined the world in mourning the demise of Congolese rumba singer and musician Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba commonly known as Papa Wemba.
In a statement posted on Mutua's official Facebook page, the governor described the Congolese music star as a "music maestro" who touched many through his songs.
"Quite sad about the demise of Papa Wemba. He once attended my East African Music Awards and gave an amazing performance," the post read.
"Lala salama (sleep well) maestro," the post continued.
Wemba died at the age of 66 after reportedly collapsing on stage while performing at a music festival on Saturday afternoon in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
The flamboyant singer shot to prominence in the 1960s with his band Zaïko before going solo later.
