The hotels were closed down on the grounds that they did not meet health standards to prevent the outbreak of the disease.

Two of the hotels shut down are located in Kwa -Akamba market, four in Kakuyuni and eleven in Kangundo town. The county government under the leadership of Dr Alfred Mutua reached the agreement to close the food joints to protect the residents from the disease that has hit Nairobi.

Other counties where the disease’s outbreak has been reported are Garissa, Narok, Kericho, Mombasa, Vihiga, Kiambu, Nakuru, Turkana, Nakuru, Wajir, Tana River and Murang'a.

They were closed following a directive from district public health officer Zachary Ochonka. The outlet will only start operating after the hygienic standards have been improved.

“There is no single reported cholera case in Machakos but we are putting adequate measures to ensure our people are safe." On his part, Mutua has asked health officers in the county be on alert as the fight against the ailments continues.

“Our personnel are ready to ensure our people are safe,” he said. He further said that ambulances in the county will operate 24/7.
