Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua now claims that the National Super Alliance (NASA) has lost its footing in the county.
Speaking on Citizen Television on Sunday, Mutua said the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga-led opposition had lost the political support it previously enjoyed in the county, hence its "terrible" performance in the last poll.
Mutua based the claim on his reelection, which has since been annulled by the appellate court.
He cited his ability to overcome the coalition summit’s onslaught and intense campaign in the area, under the leadership of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka who is also considered the Ukambani political don, to retain his seat.
‘’NASA no longer has a say in Machakos as despite Raila and Kalonzo Musyoka pitching tent in the county to campaign against me and demonizing me and my bid, they never made any achievement and I still came back,’’Mutua said.
The Governor retained his seat on his Maendeleo Chap Chap party ticket, which was allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party, with the head of State also proceeding to secure a re-election.
Mutua said he will try his luck in the presidency come 2022 general elections.
