Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua walks on Athi River streets during his meet the people tour in Mavoko Sub County on Tuesday.
Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has accused management of Mavoko Water and Sewerage Company of fleecing the residents.
Mutua said the firm was not doing much to ensure water shortage in Mavoko Sub County becomes a thing of the past.
“When I get back to office the first thing will be to dissolve MAVWASCO,” said Mutua.
He addressed the public at a rally in Athi River town, Mavoko Sub County on Tuesday.
Mutua said his government will not sell water in the entire county since the commodity is a basic necessity.
“My government will provide fresh water to all residents free of charge in the entire county, nobody will be charged a penny for the basic necessity,” said Mutua.
He said MAVWASCO had a culture of disconnecting water in residents’ premises for lack of pay while its management was not making necessary measures to ensure the lines had the commodity.
“The problem of water scarcity will be a thing of the past in Mavoko and entire county by December this year if I am re – elected, Machakos will be like America God willing,” said Mutua.
Mutua said he had lobbied for Sh 2.5 Billion from the Belgium government for a mega water project in Mlolongo, Syokimau, Athi River and Kyumvi areas of Mavoko Sub County.
He said the project was yet to commence so as to connect the areas to water line from the Ndakaini Dam at the Nairobi’s General Motors.
Mutua said the project will supplement the single EPZ water line which the locals apparently depend on for fresh water.
His sentiments came few days after residents from Syokimau raised complaints on MAVWASCO.
They said they paid water connection fee to the firm’s management two years ago but it had failed to provide them with the service.
MAVWASCO’s managing director Michael Mangeli said the residents should be patient as the company was yet to do the connections.
“We admit collecting water connection fees from some of the residents, they should be patient since we are almost providing them with the commodity,” said Mangeli.
Mangeli said residents who thought they had been conned by the firm should get to his office for refund.
