Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s JKL Show on Sunday, Mutua said the vice has reached unprecedented levels.

He said President Uhuru Kenyatta must support the fight against corruption through lifestyle audit of public servants if it has to succeed.

“The lifestyle audit will work if the President wants it to work. The president needs to declare corruption as a national disaster,” Mutua said.

Mutua claimed the President is surrounded by many people who want to enrich themselves using public resources.

He further said the war against corruption is a collective responsibility of all Kenyans at different levels.

“The President, for lack of a better word, is a man ‘held hostage’ by corrupt elements in his own circles. People in gov't are the ones involved in graft,"  Mutua added.

Mutua's sentiments come barely a week since Uhuru directed all public procurement to be undertaken using Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) in a bid to streamline money movement in the economy.

“Further, from the 1st of January 2019, all public procurement will be undertaken through the electronic platform of IFMIS. The Cabinet Secretary National Treasury has been directed to guarantee the integrity of the system, and secure the seamless integration of all public procuring entities,” Uhuru said.
