Machakos governor Alfred Mutua has called on government agencies to arrest and charge perpetrators of hate speech on social media.
Mutua said some posts on Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and other social media outlets contain content that may plunge the country into ethnic turmoil.
In a video posted on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, the governor urged the relevant authorities to take action saying perpetrators should "face the full wrath of the law."
"I urge that strong action also be taken against perpetrators of hate on social media.
Some WhatsApp groups, Facebook and Twitter posts have been used to peddle lies, create tribal animosity and divide Kenyans," the governor said.
"Those who participate in hate speech, post inciting messages on social media forums should also face the full wrath of the law," he added.
