County governments have been warned against collecting money from filmmakers in the name of film licenses.
Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) chairman Ezekiel Mutua clarified that film licensing was sole mandate of the board.
Speaking during the closing of the International Film Convention Kenya at Safari Park in Nairobi, Mutua decried the multiplicity of film licensing by county governments and termed it illegal.
"Film licensing is a national function. Anyone with film license from KFCB should be able to film in any part of the country and does not need to acquire another licence from any county government," he said.
Mutua said the board had sought the opinion of Kenya Law Reform Commission which reiterated that only filming services need to be charged at the county level.
He also said the board had great plans to grow the creative industry in the country.
"We will work hard to ensure Kenya does not lose to South Africa as a filming destination ever again," he added.
