Photo: James M/hivisasa.com Machakos governor Alfred Mutua’s Maendeleo Chap Chap received a major boost after hundreds of members of his rival party, Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) led by former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti defected to the party.
Five other sitting MCAs led by minority leader, Thomas Mweu Kasoa also joined Dr Mutua’s party and declared their support to the governor in the August 8, general election.
The defections come at a time when a recent opinion survey conducted by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) suggested that Dr Mutua would beat his opponents in the gubernatorial race with over 70% rating, if the elections were called today. Wavinya was rated second with about 8% approval by those who polled.
Dr Mutua, who received the defectors at the party’s campaign headquarters in Machakos said he was excited by the move and congratulated them for joining ‘the most progressive political party’ in the country.
“Together we shall work together to ensure residents of Machakos County get high quality and timely services through visionary leadership and involving wananchi in key decisions on development matters,” said Dr Mutua.
During a recent tour of development projects in Kangundo and Masinga sub counties, Mutua reiterated that MCC would field candidates in all positions apart from the presidency, which he said will support President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election.
Earlier Tuesday, Dr Mutua through his press secretary and communications director, Mutinda Mwanzia said Maendeleo Chap Chap was open to any like minded leader across the country who believes in transformative leadership and zero tolerance to corruption.
