Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua wants all Kenyans in the diaspora to vote during the 2022 general election.
Mutua who spoke in Gucha, Kisii County on Friday said the majority of Kenyans in the diaspora always want to take part in elections back home but the IEBC system does not allow them to exercise their democratic right.
"There are some people who know that Kenyans who are overseas will not tolerate corrupt and inactive leaders and so would like to suppress that vital vote," Mutua said.
"Kenyans in the diaspora remit billions of shillings back home and they have a right to vote for their leaders the same way as other foreigners do for their countries while away," he added.
Currently, it is only Kenyans who live in countries in East Africa; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania who vote.
Those living in other African countries such as Europe, Asia, Australia and the US don't vote.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through its chairman Wafula Chebukati, however, recently said there are efforts geared towards ensuring all Kenyans in the diaspora vote.
Mutua said Kenyans in the diaspora have every right to take part in local elections.
