Former Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga has advised the writer of lesbian movie 'RAFIKI' (friend) to sue the government following the banning of the movie in the country.
Mutunga said the movie that was expected to be staged during the Cannes Festival this year is adult content and there is nothing to show that underage Kenyans would watch the film.
"You must challenge the ban in a court of law... and as you imply also in a court of public opinion. Contact Katiba Institute in Nairobi," Mutunga said in response to the movie's writer, Wanuri, that film had been banned by the Kenya Films and Classifications Board (KFCB).
The movie is about two girls who despite the political differences between their respective families, remain close and vow to pursue their dreams in a society that has remained rigid and conservative.
The main actors in the movie, Kena and Riziki, remain so close that love begins to blossom between the two. In a trailer making rounds on social media platforms, the two are seen kissing- implying the springing up of a love affair.
Wanuri said the decision by the KFCB to ban the film had denied adult Kenyans the opportunity to see what they would want to see.
"We believe adult Kenyans are mature and discerning enough to watch local content but their right has been denied," Wanura said on Twitter on Friday.
Its ban contradicts KFCB chief executive officer Ezekiel Mutua's earlier praise of the movie saying it clearly showed how young Kenyans struggle with sexuality.
