The National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) chairman John Mututho has raised a red flag over the alleged grabbing of a piece of land in Gilgil.

The two and a half acre parcel of land is allegedly meant for the construction of a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts and alcoholics.

Speaking on Sunday, Mututho pointed out that the land which was meant to host the first rehabilitation centre was already being grabbed by known individuals.

He said that this had stalled the initiative which was to start in June.

“We were targeting VIPs, drug addicts and illicit drink users as we realised that the capacity of institutions that handled drug addicts was not enough hence the need for the rehabilitation centre,” he said.

According to Mututho, they have already started investigations into the issue and appealed to the Nakuru County government through the Ministry of Health to give them a way forward.

“We already acquired the piece of land and are fencing it. We intend to carry out proper counselling for three months. We will also encourage social integration, discipline and checking out for relapsing,” he said.

Nakuru Chief of Health Samuel Mwaura Mwangi said they had responded to Nacada over the initiative in June and they were to start construction of the facilities.
