The National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) boss John Mututho has called for an empowerment of the institution to enable it to fight drug abuse in the country.

Speaking during a TV interview Friday, Mututho said there is a need to vest more powers in the authority so that it could arrest and prosecute perceived drug dealers without involving the bureaucratic police processes.

"If Nacada could have the authority such that instead of being referred to as the national campaign it is referred to as the national control against drug abuse then we would beat this vice," he told Citizen Tv.

Mututho Wednesday sensationally claimed that there are drug cartels in the University of Nairobi whose disagreement heralded chaos in the campus which later led to its closure after students riots.

Mututho further claimed that the cartels enjoy the protection of some senior police officers in the country.

He has since been ordered by police to record statement on the same.
