Congestion has been eased at the Likoni channel after one of its vessel that had broken down for about a month resumed operations.
Hundreds of commuters and motorists at the Likoni channel are relived after MV Jambo, the biggest vessel resumed operations this morning
MV Jambo, which is also the newest ferry at Likoni crossing point, was withdrawn from operation on Match 19th by Kenya Ferry Services (KFS), after what was said to be a mechanical problem. The breakdown had left transport crisis at the Likoni channel as well as at the Mtongwe channel, this is after the management was forced to recall MV Likoni from the Mtongwe channel to join MV Harambee and MV Kilindini, to cater for the hundreds commuters and motorists at the Likoni channel
At least 320,000 commuters and 6,000 motorists use the Likoni channel in a single day
It was said MV Jambo's problem came about due to mishandling that led to the damage of its clutch. Its repair took too long because the spare parts had to be imported.
“We have already bought a clutch and other necessary accessories from Turkey, we are now working on Jambo to make sure that it is brought back to operation as soon as possible,” said KFS Managing Director Bakari Gowa in March
It has also been said that KFS has warned its staff on handling vessels, some officials have already been suspended over the same.
