Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir has clarified why opposition chief Raila Odinga flew from Nairobi to Kabarak to meet former President Daniel Moi.
Nassir said the visit was purely meant to forge ways of uniting Kenyans and not undermine any political leader eyeing the 2022 presidency.
"The intention [of the meeting] was never to weaken anyone but the intention was to strengthen Kenyans at large," Nassir said in an interview with KTN News.
"The former president has been unwell and underwent a surgery, it was a courtesy call. So I am telling Kenyans that we did not go there to undermine anyone, but come 2022 we will battle it out," he added.
There were mixed reactions on social media on the purpose of the meeting with a section of Kenyans claiming Raila is scheming at sidelining Deputy President William Ruto during the 2022 presidential election.
Ruto has indicated he will contest for the presidency in 2022.
Garissa Township MP and Ruto's ally Aden Duale shortly after the meeting expressed fear that the meeting could have been convened to undermine other leaders from Rift Valley.
He said leaders should feel free to visit Moi to wish him well but not to cut political deals.
Among those who accompanied Raila was Vihiga Senator George Khaniri.
