The Kenya Red Cross society is set to sensitise students in Mvita Constituency on fire safety following the increase in school fires in the country.
Addressing journalists on Thursday after leading a consultative meeting with Red Cross officials and various education stakeholders, Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir said the humanitarian organisation will partner with schools to put in place protection mechanisms in the event of disasters in schools.
"We have resolved to partner with Red Cross to train and equip students and members of the community in order to prepare themselves to contain disasters in the future. Each school will be given five days to review their mechanism to acceptable standards with help from my office," he said.
"We will also set up a technical team together with the Kenya Red Cross that will go round all schools with the aim of reviewing protection mechanism in the possibility of any unforeseen disaster," he added.
