Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya has urged his fiercest rival Chirau Ali Mwakwere and other aspirants eying different seats in the county to conduct civilized campaigns.
Speaking in Kwale Town on Wednesday, Mvurya accused his rivals of using threats and intimidation to woo for votes. The rebel ODM governor said there is no need for politicians to fight each other as the power to elect leaders lies with residents.Mvurya said the time when politicians used to force themselves to power through intimidation is long gone.“As politicians eying various seats we must engage in civilized campaigns and desist from acts that could cause disunity and violence among our people,” said Mvurya, as quoted by The Star.He asked residents to reject politicians using threats and intimidation to survive politically. The Jubilee governor also asked residents to vote for conscious development leaders, adding that the county needs leaders who will push its development forward and not those who are only interested in getting power and wealth. He also urged residents to maintain peace as they wait for the August 8 polls.Mvurya is facing stiff competition in his re-election bid from Mwakwere. The former Kenyan Ambassador to Tanzania is seeking to unseat Mvurya on a Wiper party ticket. The two politicians have been engaging in public spats with Mwakwere accusing Mvurya of betraying ODM by working with Jubilee.
