Kwale governor Salim Mvurya has an uphill task ahead of him after the opposition unveiled its plan to control the county assembly to quash his support.

The contest for the speaker’s seat will renew the rivalry between Jubilee and NASA at the coastal county.

ODM politician Nicholas Zani, immediate former speaker Sammy Ruwa and lawyer Rafael Chimera have also expressed interest in the post.

In an exclusive interview with the Star, ODM politician Nicholas Zani said that he has joined the race for the county assembly speaker.

Speaking after a meeting with area party officials, Zani said that he opted to contest for the post after consulting different parties over the matter.

"After wide consultation, I have decided run for the seat," he said, as quoted by the local daily.

According to Chimera he is the best bet for the post because of his vast experience in the affairs of the nation.

"I am considering and consulting ... if it is viable, I will try but if it is more politicised I will stay away. I will be stronger outside than inside and I know the MCAs are mature enough and will not allow external factors to undermine me," he said.

On his part, Mvurya has exuded confidence that Jubilee will carry the day.

"We are not scared...Kwale is no longer a region where leaders from outside would imagine undermining its leadership,” he said.
