The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) may be forced to re-think its choice of Kwale gubernatorial candidate amid murmurs of reservation regarding former Matuga MP Chirau Ali Mwakwere.
Mwakwere, who is one of the region's political heavyweights recently joined the Raila Odinga-led party after tendering his resignation as Kenyan Ambassador to Tanzania.
However, his entry into the county politics has not been taken lightly with a section of party supporters warning against his favouritism in the party primaries.
ODM, which enjoys massive following in the county has so far attracted a total of six aspirants seeking its gubernatorial ticket including Issah Chipera, Nicholas Zani, Sammy Ruwa who is the county Speaker, Mohammed Mwachai and Gereza Dena.
However, Zani may bolt out of the race and instead vie for the county's senatorial seat which was left vacant following the death of Boy Juma Boy.
A meeting by party loyalists in Ukunda on Sunday resolved to resist any attempts by the outfit to impose Mwakwere on them, and threatened to ditch the party if fair nominations will not be conducted.
The party might thus have to go back to the drawing board lest they lose the seat to Jubilee's Salim Mvurya.
