Yatta constituency member of parliament, Francis Mwangangi on Sunday called upon the county governments in which the River Athi passes through their area of jurisdiction to come together for the concern of conservation of the natural resource which serves large importance to the nation of Kenya.
Speaking in a public meeting in Kibwezi, Mwangangi said that Machakos, Makueni, Kiambu, Nairobi and Kitui counties should join hands to ensure the conservation of River Athi and its waters.
"We irrigate our farms, among other domestic uses, with River Athi's water and if we do not raise concern about the rapid pollution the river is being subjected to currently, we will not be able to use the water for anything in the near future," explained Mwangangi.
Mwangangi mostly blamed industries in Thika and Nairobi for the disposal of their waste materials directly into the river, contributing the big percentage of pollution and even endangering marine life especially fish which most times are witnessed floating lifelessly as the water flows.
Mwangangi therefore suggested that it would be good and quite effective if all counties in which the river flows through come together, make policies and restrictions to conserve the river in order to prevent extremes in the ongoing pollutions.
