Kenya could be a military state should both sides of political divide fail to ‘sober’ up ahead of August polls, observes historian Alfred Ngare.
Both Jubilee Party and main opposition NASA coalition have been embroiled in a war of words that has often translated to ugly and chaotic political scenes across the country.
And the University of Wit Waters Rand scholar says Army Chief Samson Mwathethe could be a compromise president should politicians fail to tone down ahead of August.
“I foresee a scenario where Kenya will be a military state if politicians continue with this trend,” said Ngare in an interview at his Riondong’a rural home on Tuesday.
He added: “The temperatures are rising and don’t expect it to be 2008 Grand Coalition. Everybody wants to win and I see a tough battle that could lead to a military intervention.”
In their political rallies, both coalitions have maintained confidence that they will win with the opposition warning government against rigging.
With only five months to elections, the electoral body IEBC is still struggling to procure vital equipment needed for election results transmission.
