Mwaura, who was speaking at Joytown Special School in Thika, said that the disabled are regarded as unprivileged, yet they are privileged like any other Kenyans if given equal opportunity.

He said that Kenya needs to move towards being a more inclusive society that actively integrates disabled persons to be a part of and not apart from the community.

Mwaura hailed the county government of Kiambu for the purchase of assistive devices such as walking canes, wheelchairs and Braille, terming it as good governance every county should emulate.

The ODM MP expressed his concerns with the many counties leaving the disabled out of the cash transfer programme meant to cater for older persons, orphans and the vulnerable.

Mwaura lamented that although many of their members registered under the programme, only a few were receiving the monthly stipend of Sh2,000 which was even little for them to make ends meet.

“The disabled now want the government to revise the figures and cater for more disabled people since we are being suppressed, and I appeal DP William Ruto to check on the issue,” said Mwaura.

He complained that during registrations, elderly are given more application chances than the disabled that are more vulnerable in the society.

He however expressed his gratitude with the little the Jubilee government is offering to the disabled, saying it has positively impacted better living standards.
