A group of Public health officers based in Kisii town have urged residents of Mwembe estate to avoid careless dumping of litter near the estate.
Speaking on Monday at the estate during a general inspection of business, the group, led by John Omboga said the estate is among the leading dirty suburbs, and many of its inhabitants risked contracting several diseases due to the menace.
“When you look around you will find litter everywhere. This is quite perilous for your health. Do not not take this for granted since environmental degradation is an international problem hence we are not an exception,” he said.
He wondered why people ittered everywhere despite existing dumping sites that were launched by county Governor James Ongwae towards the end of last year during the general cleaning exercise in the county.
“I do not think we have a valid reason of throwing litter everywhere. We having existing dumping sites in this place which we should use as expected,” added Omboga.
He warned small scale traders, especially those dealing with food stuffs against exposing health of Kenyans to risk by being unhygienic whenever dealing with food stuffs.
“We will not condone those dirty small scale traders dealing with food stuffs. You must be extremely clean and put on a white apron. Satisfying international cleaning standards is mandatory hence not negotiable,” said the public health officer.
He said cleanliness was a personal responsibility but relevant government authorities will enforce it whenever necessary.
During the exercise, several business owners were given a one-week ultimatum to ensure cleanliness in the area.
