Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi has expressed confidence that the court will uphold his election as vote recount kicks off.
Speaking on Thursday to journalist, Mr Omar said his election as the MP for Changamwe was free and fair and according to the law.
The recount of Changamwe constituency votes kicked off on Thursday morning at the public works offices in Shimanzi area of Mombasa following a court ruling.
Mr Omar said he was not worried about the recount of votes because residents of Changamwe elected him and the votes in the ballot boxes will prove it.
“I am not worried. I can tell you the people of Changamwe decided on the 8th of August 2017, and what is in the ballot boxes is their will,” said the MP.
Last week, the Mombasa High Court issued orders to recount votes of polling stations in Changamwe constituency, Mombasa County.
Justice Njoki Mwangi made the ruling following a petition filed by Mr Mohamed Abdi Daib who was vying for Changamwe parliamentary seat on a Jubilee Party ticket but lost to ODM’s Omar Mwinyi.
Mr Daib in his petition wanted the court to order a probe into why there are two different reports on Forms 37B on how many votes were garnered in Changamwe during the August 8 General Election.
Justice Mwangi in his ruling ordered for the scrutiny and recount of votes in 81 polling stations in Changamwe constituency saying that there was variance in the results at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) portal and the results declared on the forms.
