An MP from Mombasa close to opposition chief Raila Odinga has declared she will back Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho's presidential bid in 2022.
Mishi Mboko (Likoni, ODM) said on Tuesday voters from Coast have backed candidates from other zones to win the presidency in previous years and in 2022 other electoral areas should rally behind an aspirant from ether Mombasa, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Kwale or Taita Taveta for the top seat.
So far, from the six counties that constitute the Coast region, only Joho has declared interest in succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta when after the 2022 presidential polls.
"It is not that we mean bad for candidates from other regions," she said after addressing groups of youth in her constituency.
"We have backed other candidates and we are convinced it's our turn. My candidate is the governor for Mombasa."
Joho has consistently said he will contest for the presidency in 2022 as he seeks to become Kenya's fifth president when Uhuru officially leaves State House.
He said in January that he is determined to take on any candidate the Jubilee party will field during the polls.
So far, apart from Joho, other governors who have declared interest in the presidency in 2022 include Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia) and Dr Alfred Mutua (Machakos).
