Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has accused fellow contestants for the city governorship seat saying they are responsible for the rising rates of crime in Nairobi's Eastlands.

Kidero accused his rivals for supporting extortionists and criminal groups as they terrorise residents.

He specifically pointed out Kayole and Komarock as the main areas his rivals have enjoy the mutual support of members of organised crime groups.

“There is an emergence of more organised criminals who are extorting cash from Matatu operators and I believe they have the backing of some politicians in the city,” he said.

He said the menace has now spread to other slum areas where these gangs demand protection money from the residents in the neighbourhood.

He was speaking during a meeting with Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations.

He said the gangs always have the traits of resurfacing before the elections, something he believes pins it to politicians.

“We had managed to do away with the gangs, but they are back. They are targeting minibuses which make up a large percentage in the transport sector,” he said.
