I first visited Nakuru when I was in form three during a school trip to the scenic Menengai Crater. Here, the breathtaking beauty of this physical feature stole my heart and I knew it was love at first sight.
“Hey girls, it’s getting late. Let’s get back to the bus so that we can proceed to our next destination,” ordered Mr Mugo, our Geography teacher.
I dragged my feet back to the bus heartbroken trying to hide how disappointed I was. But in my heart, I made a promise to the crater that I would be back.
As we drove off to Nakuru town, I wouldn’t take my eyes off the beautiful valleys, trees and the birds flying around.
We later had lunch at the Perfect hotel in town before proceeding to Hell’s Gate in Naivasha. Although I have never had a chance to go back, the memories are still intact. If you are a lover of hiking, Hell’s Gate is the perfect place. The fun we had climbing rocks, the hot water, and everything was simply amazing. This day marked the beginning of my love story with Nakuru - a love that never ends.
But it would take some time before reuniting with my new found love. Two years later, the heavens knew how much I had fallen in love with the Flamingo city and they granted me an opportunity to work as a till operator in one of the supermarkets. I had a chance to interact with all races given that Nakuru is a cosmopolitan town.
Our love affair now went to another level. All my weekends were spent visiting and admiring the beautiful features in Nakuru. The Crater, L. Nakuru and Hyrax Hill became my best friends.
The weather was awesome and the night was warm enough to allow me to enjoy watching the moon and the stars with clear skies.
Sadly, one year later, we had to part ways when I moved to Eldoret for studies only to be reunited three years later during my internship. Of course, this time I only stayed there for three months and left after the internship was over. Since then, I haven't been able to see my 'lover'.
Ours now is a long-distance relationship and the only hope I have is knowing that we shall be together again and enjoy each other’s company.
Long live Nakuru, my all time and favourite destination!
